Citizenship

Becoming a Canadian citizen affords you with additional rights, protections, and benefits, including the right to vote and be voted into public office. As a Canadian, you will participate in shaping a country that has been defined by values such as equality, respect for cultural differences and multiculturalism, peace, freedom as well as law and order.

In order to become a Canadian citizen, you need to meet certain eligibility criteria such as

  • Be a permanent resident of Canada at the time you apply for the citizenship
  • Have lived in Canada for 3 years out of 5 since becoming a permanent resident
  • Have paid all your taxes
  • Have passed the citizenship test
  • Have proved proficiency of required official language skills

There are also certain situations that might prevent you from applying for citizenship, such as if you have committed a crime in or outside Canada, you are under review for immigration fraud reasons, or you have been issued a removal order, etc.

The process of becoming a Canadian citizen can be quite straightforward or truly overwhelming, and we at IKara Immigration Law are here to guide you through the process and simplify it for you.
