Family Sponsorship

Family reunification immigration programs are among the key programs of the Canadian immigration system. If you are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, you may be able to sponsor a family member to immigrate to Canada, provided you and the sponsored family member meet the requirements set out by the current legislation.

The Family Class Sponsorship Program allows the reunification of family members through the sponsorship process. To be eligible, both you, the sponsor, and the family member seeking Canadian permanent residence must meet certain criteria.

To be eligible to sponsor a family member you must be over 18 years of age and be either a

  • Canadian citizen
  • Permanent resident or
  • Registered Indian under the Indian Act

To be eligible for a sponsorship the family member must be either a

  • Spouse, common law or conjugal partner
  • Dependent child/children
  • Parent or grandparent
  • Brother, sister, nephew, niece, aunt, uncle or grandchild provided certain conditions are met

When you are sponsoring a family member you are taking a financial
undertaking to provide for their basic needs. There are also certain
reasons why one will not be eligible to sponsor a family member.
